Convenience is everywhere: contactless payments, tap-and-go public transport cards, and even modern passports make everyday life a little easier. But this convenience comes with a hidden risk: a type of digital theft known as "skimming."
At Knomo, we believe you shouldn't have to choose between convenience and security. That’s why we’ve integrated advanced RFID protection into our laptop bags. But first, let’s understand the technology we’re up against.
RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification. It’s a technology that uses tiny radio waves to wirelessly transfer data. Think of it as a small, invisible barcode that can be scanned from a distance.
You've likely used RFID technology hundreds of times without even thinking about it. Common examples include:
Contactless Credit and Debit Cards: The small Wi-Fi-like symbol on your card indicates it has an RFID chip for fast, "tap-to-pay" transactions.
e-Passports: Modern passports contain an RFID chip that stores your personal information and biometric data.
Public Transit Cards: Cards like London's Oyster card, New York's MetroCard, or Japan's Suica card all use RFID to let you tap through gates.
Mobile Contactless Payments These services use a more advanced and secure type of RFID called NFC (Near Field Communication).
This is a crucial distinction. While both your contactless card and your phone use a form of RFID, their security is very different.
Contactless Cards: These cards use standard RFID, which can be vulnerable. A criminal with a portable reader can discreetly "skim" the card number, expiration date, and other data without ever touching you. While the information stolen may not be enough for every type of fraud, it is a genuine risk that can lead to unauthorized purchases.
Mobile Payments (E.g. Apple Pay): These services are far more secure. They use NFC, which is a very short-range RFID technology (a few centimeters at most). More importantly, they use a process called tokenization. Instead of sending your actual credit card number, your phone sends a unique, one-time-use code, or "token," for each transaction. Even if a thief could intercept this token, it would be useless to them because it doesn't contain your actual card information and can't be used again.
This is why experts, like the U.S. Secret Service, recommend using mobile payments whenever possible. They are inherently more secure against physical skimming attacks.
So if mobile payments are so secure, why is RFID protection still essential? Because a thief doesn't need to be able to use the information they steal; they just need to steal it.
Your physical credit cards, your passport, and other forms of identification still contain vulnerable RFID chips. A criminal can still use a portable reader to skim your physical cards and passport, even if you don't use them. This is the risk that Knomo’s RFID protection is specifically designed to prevent.
To combat this threat, Knomo has designed a discreet solution. Many of our laptop backpack and briefcases feature a dedicated pocket or compartment that is lined with a special material to block RFID signals.
This material, often a blend of copper alloys or other conductive fabrics, acts as a "faraday cage" for your cards. It creates a protective barrier that interferes with the radio waves emitted by scanners. When your cards and passport are inside this protected pocket, no scanner can read their data—it's like being in a bank vault for your personal information.
This integrated protection means you don't have to use bulky card protectors or specialized wallets. You can simply place your cards and passport in the designated RFID-protected pocket of your Knomo bag and go about your day with complete peace of mind.
At Knomo, our mission is to create stylish, functional bags for laptop and computers that are designed for the modern professional men and women on the move. Integrating RFID protection is just one more way we ensure our products meet the needs of today's world.
You get the elegant design, clever organization, and durable materials you expect from Knomo, plus the reassurance that your personal data is secure.
